Revitalizing Education

Notre Dame’s Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE) plays a leading role in the renewal of the Haitian educational system. Alongside international partners that include Catholic Relief Services, the Congregation of Holy Cross, and Haiti’s Episcopal Commission for Catholic Education, ACE supports some of the country’s most promising reforms in elementary and secondary schools.

Informed by a comprehensive assessment of the country’s Catholic schools, ACE coordinates the Haitian Catholic Education Initiative. ACE is transforming the Haitian Catholic school system by increasing educational quality, community access, and student services.

  • ACE supports a teacher certification program providing innovative, rigorous training for secondary school educators in partnership with the Congregation of Holy Cross.
  • Notre Dame and ACE have supported the rebuilding of Basil Moreau School, a Holy Cross school in Port-au-Prince. The school has nearly doubled its enrollment to over 1,000 students, and ACE is supporting innovative English language programs, a school clinic, and computer curricula.
  • ACE and its partners are implementing Haiti Reads, a program to serve up to 7,500 students in over 50 Catholic schools. In a country with close to 50% illiteracy, ACE and Haiti Reads will help transform lives and strengthen society.
